愛知県瀬戸市は約1,000年以上の歴史と伝統を有する日本有数の陶磁器産地で、日本六古窯の一つにも数えられています。市内では、世界的に見ても良質で豊富な陶土が採掘され、その陶土により多彩な瀬戸焼をつくることが可能となっています。瀬戸の名は、日本でやきもの全般を指す「せともの（瀬戸物）」の語源ともなっています。

Seto City in Aichi Prefecture is one of Japan’s leading ceramic production areas, boasting a history and tradition spanning over 1,000 years. It is also counted among Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns. The city is home to high-quality and abundant clay, which is rare even on a global scale. This rich clay resource enables the production of a wide variety of Seto ware. The name “Seto” itself is the origin of the Japanese term “Setomono,” which is used to refer to ceramics in general.

赤津焼 / Akazu Ware

赤津焼の特徴は、織部釉(おりべゆう)、志野釉(しのゆう)、黄瀬戸釉(きぜとゆう)、古瀬戸釉(こぜとゆう)、灰釉(かいゆう)、御深井釉(おふけゆう)、鉄釉(てつゆう)の7種類の釉薬と、へら彫り、印花(いんか)、櫛目(くしめ)、三島手(みしまで)など12種類の多彩な装飾技法にあります。これらを駆使し、茶道具、華道具から家庭用品まで多種多様な製品がつくられます。

The distinctive feature of Akazu Ware lies in its use of seven types of glazes: Oribe glaze, Shino glaze, Kizeto glaze, Kose-to glaze, Ash glaze, Ofuke glaze, and Iron glaze. Additionally, it incorporates twelve diverse decorative techniques, including spatula carving, stamped patterns (Inka), comb patterns (Kushime), and Mishima-style inlays. By skillfully combining these elements, a wide variety of products are created, ranging from tea ceremony and flower arrangement utensils to everyday household items.

瀬戸染付焼 / Seto Sometsuke Ware

白色の素地に呉須（ごす）という酸化コバルトを主原料とした顔料を用いて絵付を行い、釉薬を施した後に焼成して、文様を藍色に発色させたものが染付です。瀬戸染付焼は、藍色を基調とした色彩で繊細な自然画や花鳥風月などを描く技術と、本焼成時に「ねらし(一定時間窯の温度を高温のまま維持)」を行い、釉薬を熟成させ潤いを持った仕上がりにするところに特徴があります。

Sometsuke (blue-and-white ware) is created by painting designs on a white ceramic base using “gosu,” a cobalt oxide-based pigment. After applying a glaze, the piece is fired, resulting in patterns that develop a distinctive indigo-blue hue. Seto Sometsuke Ware is characterized by its delicate depictions of natural landscapes, birds, flowers, and seasonal motifs in shades of blue. Another defining feature is the “nerashi” technique, in which the kiln temperature is maintained at a high level for a certain period during the main firing. This process allows the glaze to mature, giving the final product a rich and lustrous finish.
