Project background
There is a need for the development of chromium-free chemical conversion treatment technology for zinc galvanizing.
○ The main stream for galvanized conversion coating films is chromating with trivalent chromium
○ However, there is the possibility some of the trivalent chromium will change into the hazardous material hexavalent chromium.
○ Therefore, the development of an affordable chromium-free plating technology is an urgent necessity.
Points of R&D
Establishment of a technology for chromium-free chemical conversion treatment for zinc galvanizing
○ Chromium-free corrosion prevention coating film ⇒ white rust resistance: 120 hours or more; red rust resistance: 216 hours or more
○ Reduction of running cost ⇒ 10% reduction compared to conventional cost

Specific R&D results
Confirmed a corrosion protection effect for white chromium-free coating film
○ Evaluated corrosion resistance of chemical conversion coating film and carried out observation of both the surface and cross-section
○ No occurrence of white rust or red rust was seen on white chromium-free coating film after elapsed times of 240 hours and 500 hours respectively
○ Confirmed that the film was a corrosion protection coating film with the same barrier properties as a trivalent chromate film.
No corrosion protection effects obtained with black chromium-free coating film
○ Occurrence of white rust and red rust was seen on black chromium-free coating film within 48 hours and 240 hours respectively
○ Corrosion resistance of black chromium-free coating film was about the same as that of a material with no chemical conversion coating film.
Confirmed the conditions for establishing mass production technology
○ Investigated optimal conditions for bath concentration, treatment time, bath temperature and pH for mass production of white chromium-free coating film
○ As a result, validity of laboratory-scale treatment conditions for mass production lines was verified.
○ Bath concentration: 150 ml/l; chemical conversion treatment time: 15 seconds; bath temperature: 25℃; pH: 1.3
Anticipated fields / products etc. to which this technology may be applied in the future
Using this chromium-free treatment technology instead of conventional trivalent chromium plating for zinc galvanizing treatment can solve issues with chromium arising from hazardous materials, and cost reductions can also be expected.

Effects of commercialization ○ Will reduce the environmental burden: contains absolutely no chromium, so will comply with regulations such as RoHS, ELV and REACH

○ Newspapers: The Mid-Japan Economist (November 21, 2011), Business & Technology Daily News (December, 2011)
Future outlook Currently providing samples to downstream companies and aiming at commercialization around 2012 to 2013.
○ In order to achieve practical applications, supplementary research is underway for further improvements to corrosion resistance and further cost reductions.
○ Providing prototypes to downstream companies (in screw and automobile industries) and conducting performance evaluations and durability tests.
○ Prospect of practical applications in the screw industry, with plans to develop a sales channel by September 2012 and achieve commercialization within one year after that.
