Project background
Binders using safe materials are being called for, as current binders used in photo-crosslinkable inkjet ink use highly toxic and hydrophobic acrylate esters.
Points of R&D
This research project aimed to establish a synthesis technology for high-performance, water-soluble compounds, since there is a demand for binders for photo-crosslinkable inkjet inks which use safe materials .
Specific R&D results
Inexpensive and safe synthesis using a simple method was made possible through the creation of a water-soluble compound with a hyperbranched structure, using sugar etc. as the starting material.
We selected five compounds as optimal polymerizable groups for a water-soluble hyperbranched compound and confirmed their utility as photopolymerizable groups.

Promotion comments

Using safe and inexpensive materials, through the use of large numbers of hydroxyl groups, we have introduced photopolymerizable groups while maintaining water solubility.
Example uses include in coating, patterning and gel-forming materials.
These are water-soluble polymers with polymerizable functional groups grafted on. By adding a polymerization initiator, it is possible to make these polymers cure by subjecting them to ultraviolet light irradiation.
