Project details

Project background
This project proposes a new system for effectively utilizing next-generation vehicles. The issue was largely raised as a result of the tragic "3/11 Disaster" of 2011. The most important issue is to eliminate elements of concerns in car sharing.
Against this background, we propose the construction of a system that enables operating costs to be substantially reduced while maintaining the reliability of the transportation means.
Points of R&D
The current situation of car sharing systems is that many stations are managed without being manned. Battery charging is done by users, but inspections for car damage, safety and potential breakdowns are not carried out at all. Therefore, the liability for an accident, breakdown, etc. cannot be ascertained in the current situation. This means that safety and reliable maintenance for assured transportation is insufficient. Solving this problem means regularly dispatching personnel to carry out exterior and safety inspections, thereby incurring labor and travel costs which must be born by the members. This issue is hindering the spread of car sharing. In the promotion of car sharing, which realizes efficient transportation and reduced environmental burdens, unmanned vehicle inspection stations are a central issue and are becoming a critical need among downstream companies. In this R&D project, the aim is to construct a system that allows, while vehicles are being charged at unmanned EV car sharing stations, exterior inspections for damage and verification of safety and reliability using information from on-board devices, operations which conventionally require human intervention.
Specific R&D results
Using IT, automatically collect and manage vehicle information for before and after a journey.
By managing the "interior and exterior condition" of a vehicle, damage can be discovered and liability ascertained, and safety and reliability can be secured through unmanned operation.

This project aims to develop vehicle inspection system software for EVs that can guarantee reliability and safety through exterior inspections of a vehicle using image analysis technology and vehicle information collected from on-board devices. The results of the project will realize unmanned operation of car sharing stations, by installing the system into EV battery chargers.

Work toward commercialization

Future outlook For commercialization with a view to selling an "unmanned vehicle inspection system for EV car sharing" which uses the results of this R&D, we will develop a commercialization plan based on the needs of user companies related to cost and technical factors required for practical application. In addition, with regard to diagnostic devices for daily inspections of EVs / PHVs produced using technology developed through the R&D project for the collection and processing of on-board information from EVs / PHVs, next-generation battery charging facilities produced using built-in software technology developed through the R&D project for battery charging facilities which can be used in EV / PHV car sharing, etc., we will offer samples to downstream companies and, on the basis of their evaluations, review specifications with a view to application of the technology.

Promotion comments

Conventionally, carrying out exterior inspections for damage and daily inspections of vehicles at EV car sharing stations requires human intervention. The results of this R&D project will enable daily and exterior inspections of vehicles to be conducted without human intervention, using on-board data. This will enable substantial reductions in operating costs and secure transportation reliability, which will lead to an expansion of car sharing business. At the same time, we aim to promote the use of EVs. In addition, the results of this R&D project will enable the detection of "characteristic changes resulting from deterioration of consumable components" for next-generation automobiles, which will make applications in the aftermarket field possible.
