About the Supporting Industry Program

What are supporting industries?
A Supporting industries (abbreviated to Sapo-In in Japanese) are monozukuri SMEs with manufacturing technology that supports Japan's manufacturing industry. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) supports R&D initiatives which lead to the advancement of supporting industries.
What is the Supporting Industry Program?
A This program provides government funding for R&D conducted by SMEs in collaboration with downstream companies and research institutes for the advancement of monozukuri manufacturing technologies and the development of new technologies. Industries participating in the Supporting Industry Program must obtain a certification of business plan in accordance with the SME Manufacturing Enhancement Act and the business proposal must qualify for funding.

What are the characteristics of technologies developed through the Supporting Industry Program?
A Because the R&D projects created and proposed by SMEs are evaluated in terms of technology and commercialization based on the needs of downstream users, the Program accepts not only sound R&D proposals, but also proposals aimed at the development of technologies and products that can improve productivity and quality for downstream companies,  improve company competitiveness through cost reduction, etc.
