Handa City
Handa, the City of Kura, Passing the History of Brewing to the Present
Handa City faces the good natural harbor of Kinugaura Bay,and in addition to prospering in marine transportation, has also developed brewing, textile and salt making industries. The sake, vinegar, miso and soy sauce brewing industries that started in the Edo period are vibrant even today, and black wooden-walled kuras(warehouses)still remain along the canal.Traces of a brick-built beer brewing plant from the Meiji period has been preserved. Handa is also proud of its cultural flavor as the birth place of Nankichi Niimi,a literary man, along with its long history.

A City of Kura
Black wooden-walled warehouses stand around the Handa canal area, with the beautiful scenery of these buildings reflected in the bay. Strolling along the roads by the canal is a great way to observe the distinct contrast of the black and white walls of the kura.

Comments from an overseas visitor
I loved the atmosphere of the Kura towns, and was impressed with the "Su-no-Sato" Museum's informative guide to vinegar and so forth. It was a great experience seeing the vinegar manufacturing process. I would like to visit again. (Ro Setsuna)
I was deeply impressed with reception and smile of the guide at "Su-no-Sato." The museum was quite unique, and I wish to visit again with my family and friends, as it appears to be the only one in Japan. (Li Kosai)
